One of our favorite woods for turning, Ambrosia Maple offers colorful striping and overall great figure. It’s easy to cut and leaves a smooth surface with sharp tools. Sanding and finishing are quick and easy, albeit you may need to fill a wormhole or two as you go.
The Ambrosia beetle causes the coloring found in these blanks. As the beetle burrows into the tree, it creates "worm-holes" and varying discoloration in the form of streaks. Turning blanks are sold partly seasoned with no guarantee of moisture content.
All blanks are unseasoned and should be rough-turned, sealed, and allowed to dry before final shaping and finishing. We recommend turning the bowl to a 1" wall thickness throughout and sealing it with Tree Saver™ Green Wood Sealer, then allowing the bowl to fully dry before final turning.
